Promotion Basics
To get the most out of your club's promotional efforts, you'll want to understand:
- Your goal
- The message you want to send
- Who you want to receive your message
- How you’ll send the message
- How people motivated by your message can respond
Your Goal
Do you want to increase public awareness of your club? Recognize the achievements of club members? Encourage attendance at an open house or speech contest? Attract new members? Defining your goal helps you determine your message and select effective promotional methods.
Your Message
Toastmasters International has carefully crafted promotional messages that your club can use instantly. Look for phrasing on toastmasters.org/about that supports your goal. For instance, if you’re on a recruitment drive, the message “Thrive with new confidence” may be just what you need.
Your Audience
You’ll want to reach people most likely to be motivated by your message. These could be people in your geographic area. You could also consider what sort of work or volunteering your prospective members might do, and the places they look for information.
Your Channel
If your audience is, say, people who live in your area, you might try MeetUp, which has opportunities arranged by the community. If your audience is working professionals, perhaps LinkedIn, which focuses on personal and professional growth, would be a good place to share your message. The personal connection is still extremely effective. For instance, having fliers or business cards ready to hand to neighbors, friends and others when the topic of Toastmasters comes up is a powerful tactic.
Following Up
It is always a great feeling when a message lands with a receptive person, and it motivates them to learn more. Don’t forget about follow-up. Thinking ahead about who will, for instance, monitor social media messages and respond to emails will increase your chances of success. Download a Prospective Member Follow-up Email template.
